Online security tips

Despite a scammer’s best efforts, these simple steps can stand in their way – and preserve the security of the information you store and access online.

Keep your passwords and PINs private

• Don’t share passwords and PINs
• Use unique passwords
• Change passwords frequently
• Do not use all or part of your Social Security number, date of birth, street address, etc., when creating PINs or passwords
• Never write your ATM and/or credit card PIN on the cards
• Beware of people watching you at the ATM or checkout

Pay close attention to the sites and apps you’re using

• If you are providing financial information or placing an order online, be sure the site is secure. Look for a URL that begins with “https://” and a “closed padlock” () or green indicator in the address bar of your browser
• Watch out for copycat sites that may try to look like a financial institution. Be sure you are using the correct web address for your bank
• Third-party fintech apps often store and access your bank account information to help you manage your money, invest, borrow and send money.
• Download apps from reputable sources only – such as iTunes^® App Store, Amazon Appstore for Android^TM or Google Play^TM store
• Never leave your device unattended – and always log off when you are finished
• Never bank or shop on an unsecured or public wireless networks (airports, coffee shops, etc.)

Maintain your network and devices

• Make sure your device is using the latest operating system and applications
• Use a personal firewall
• If you use wireless networking, turn on all security features. Change the default password and SSID on your wireless router
• Always protect your device with a passcode lock

Keep emails and texts safe

• If an e-mail or text offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is
• Never e-mail or text personal financial information
• Don’t open e-mail or attachments from senders you don’t know
• Never respond to unsolicited e-mail or click a link within a suspicious e-mail or text message
• Use secure messaging when it’s available. Our online and mobile services have a secure messaging feature which requires you to log in. Once logged in, messages sent within our system are secure
